A State Historic Site City
Alto, Texas is a small town located in Cherokee County, Texas, with a population of just over 1,200 people. Alto was founded in the late 1800s as a stop on the International and Great Northern Railroad. The town’s name is thought to have come from the Spanish word “alto,” which means “high,” likely a reference to the town’s elevated location. Over the years, Alto has been home to a number of businesses, including sawmills and cotton gins, which played an important role in the town’s economy.
One of the most popular attractions in Alto is the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site, which is located just outside of town. This site features the remains of a Caddo Indian village that dates back over 1,200 years. Visitors can explore the site’s mounds, which were used for ceremonial purposes, as well as a museum that features exhibits about the Caddo culture.
Alto is also home to a number of parks and outdoor recreation areas. Lake Striker, which is located just outside of town, offers opportunities for boating, fishing, and camping. The Angelina National Forest, which is located about 30 minutes from Alto, features over 150,000 acres of forestland, with hiking trails, fishing spots, and picnic areas.
Alto is known for its strong sense of community, with a number of events and activities throughout the year that bring residents together. One of the town’s most popular events is the Alto Watermelon Festival, which takes place every summer and features live music, carnival rides, and of course, plenty of watermelon. Alto also has a number of community organizations, including the Alto Lions Club and the Alto Chamber of Commerce, which work to support local businesses and promote community development.
Alto has a lot to offer in terms of history, attractions, and community. Whether you’re interested in exploring the area’s rich history, enjoying the great outdoors, or simply getting to know the friendly locals, Alto is definitely worth a visit.
